GHANA BRANCH LIBRARY PROJECT

Maritime Library and Tutorial Centre Fundraising Project

Background to the project

Four years ago the Institute Education and Training Committee raised the idea of a Global Book Drive; whereby Members, Fellows and PQE completing students could donate their unused course books, any maritime related books gathering dust on shelves or in attics and garages to Institute branches around the world where students are economically disadvantaged and may not necessarily be studying the subject syllabus before taking examinations. The book drive has been a huge success with East Africa, Sri Lanka and in 2019/20 the Institute West Africa branch in Ghana being the recipients of these pre-loved books. The next recipient of books is Pakistan, where there are many economic hardships for enthusiastic students.

Fundraising campaign launch

The West Africa branch has taken up an arduous challenge of building a library in support of Maritime Education at a cost of $70,000. The idea is to embark on a massive maritime education campaign considering the branch celebrated its 10th anniversary in 2020. The Branch has operated without a permanent office.

This fundraising campaign in support of the project to build a maritime library and tutorial centre to house the Branch and its operations permanently.

We are happy to announce that the Regional Maritime University has generously donated the land on which the Centre will be built.

The Educational Trust Fund of the Institute has supported the campaign by donating books, paying for the shipment courier costs and bearing the cost of the architectural design of the center. Companies and individuals in Ghana have also been invited to contribute to towards the project.

The importance of the campaign cannot be over-emphasised as Maritime students, researchers and people from Industry stand to benefit from the use of the Library. It will open the branch to a much wider audience by attracting new individuals into the Institute by way of studentship, membership and corporate sponsorship. The students will get a place to study and use the Institute books that are not affordable for most of them.

To achieve the goals set for this campaign, support from individuals and organisations is vital as the Institute West Africa Branch cannot bear the total cost of $70,000 alone.
